Doughty, A.G. and Gustave Lanctot, "Introduction," Cheadle's Journal of Trip Across Canada, 1862-1863, by Walter B. Cheadle, Ottawa: Graphic Publishers Limited, 1931, pp. 7-13.

Cheadle's Journal of Trip Across Canada, 1862-1863 was originally published as Volume 1 of The Canada Series by F.P. Grove, and included an introduction and notes by A.G. Doughty and Gustave Lanctot. It was republished in 1971 by M.G. Hurtig, Edmonton with the addition of "Introduction to the New Edition" by Lewis H. Thomas, University of Alberta, Edmonton. Cheadle's Journal of Trip Across Canada, 1862-1863 was again reprinted in 2010 by Touchwood Publishers, Victoria, B.C. This latest reprint included an Introduction by Stephen R. Brown, as well as the "Introduction to the New Edition" which is the same 'Introduction" from the 1931 edition by A.G. Doughty and Gustave Lanctot, even though authorship is not identified.

The unique nature of Cheadle's account is explained in the "Introduction" by Doughty and Lanctot (p. 7), "This is the journal of the first transcanadian tourist...Walter Butler Cheadle was the first to traverse the whole country from the St. Lawrence to the Pacific simply "for pleasure", for the sheer enjoyment of seeing new lands, hunting the buffalo and visiting the gold regions of Cariboo."
