D., A.G., "Helen and Aphrodite", Nugae Canorae, Portland, Maine: Smith & Sale, 1897, pp. 63-70.

This is one of 28 poems by Arthur G. Doughty published in the collection, Nugae Canorae. Also, we were able to identify 3 illuminated manuscripts with the same title, created between 1894 and 1898. Each one was written and illustrated by hand. Only the 1894 illuminated manuscript held by LAC was reviewed; the other two manuscripts could not be located.

Comparison of the poem "Helen and Aphrodite" published in Nugae Canorae to the 1894 illuminated manuscript revealed that the poem resembled the manuscript in style and theme; several paragraphs were roughlry the same. However, the Nugae Canorae poem was a shortened, revised version of the 1894 manuscript with some new lines added, and many parts edited out.

Print copy of Nugae Canorae, 1897, held by LAC (OCLC #976966849) was reviewed; select images are pictured above. Digital copy from microform (CIHM 03939) available through Internet Archive (archive.org) was also reviewed; select images are pictured above.
