Prefatory note to the article written by Professor C.H. Firth, elaborated on the request for a summary account of the "Canadian record system", and the resulting memorandum by Dr. A.G. Doughty which was printed in the Third Series, Volume 9, 1915 of the Transactions of the Royal Historical Society. The Royal Historical Society (RHS), a learned society, was based from the University College, London, and first published the journal in 1872.
