Doughty, Arthur G., “Lady of Quebec”, Saturday Night, 17 January 1914, p. 29.

In this article Arthur G. Doughty paid tribute to the late Mrs. Mary Stuart (Wotherspoon) Macpherson, the wife of Colonel William Molson Macpherson. She had died on 7 October 1913 at Quebec.

AGD noted that while Mrs. Macpherson will be remembered for her kindnesses and works of charity, as well as her garden, it was her collection of scare books, manuscripts, prints, pamphlets and related material associated with the history of the City of Quebec that AGD found of exceptional value.  And so AGD concluded, “If I were asked to suggest a memorial to Mrs. Macpherson, it would be that eventually all the books and pictures which she had gathered and arranged with such loving care should be preserved intact by the nation under the name of Mrs. W.M. Macpherson’s Collection” (p. 29.).

An on-line review of LAC’s collection was not sufficient to conclude if Mrs. Macpherson’s collection had ever been acquired or not by the Archives.

Microfilm copy of Saturday Night, issue 27, 1914, containing the article “Lady of Quebec”, held by Queen’s University was reviewed; select images are pictured above.
