Publications of the Canadian Archives--No. 1-14, Ottawa: 1909-1932.
During the time A.G. Doughty was Dominion Archivist, a new series of publications was initiated to facilitate access to the historical records held in the Public Archives of Canada. One such series can be identified as Public Archives of Canada (PAC) numbered publications. While this series continued to be published after A.G. Doughty’s retirement, this description only deals with numbers 1-14 which were published from 1909 to 1932.
The level of involvement or oversight by A.G. Doughty was not always clear. There was a signed written contribution by A.G. Doughty in only two of the publications; he wrote the “Preface” for publication No. 10, and the “Introduction” to volumes 1 and 2 for publication No. 13. However, a note on the title page of each of the publications acknowledged the Dominion Archivist: “Published by authority of the Minister of Agriculture under the direction of the Archivist” or “Publié avec l’autorisation du ministre de l’agriculture sous la direction de l’archiviste”, as applicable.
For the most part these publications, in particular the catalogues, were bilingual, with descriptions written in the language of the item, unless the original language was other than English or French, in which case the descriptions were translated. In some instances, there was a French and an English version in separate volumes. For some publications there was only a French or an English version with no bilingual counterpart.
Print copies of PAC numbered publications held by Queen’s University were reviewed. Digital copies of publications available through Canadiana, Internet Archive (archive.org), and HathiTrust were also reviewed.
