"Reviews of Books", Louisbourg from its Foundations to its Fall, 1713-1758, by J.S. McLennan, Reviewed by A.G. Doughty, The Canadian Historical Review, vol. 1, no. 1 (March) 1920, pp. 65-68.

In a review of the book, Louisbourg from its Foundations to its Fall, 1713-1758, by J.S. McLennan, London: Macmillan & Co., 1918, A.G. Doughty noted that this book “may be regarded as a first attempt, in light of the present-day scholarship, to give adequate historical treatment to the story of Louisbourg” (p. 65). Doughty regarded this book as an attempt by an ‘amateur’, with its strengths and shortcomings.  While McLennan wrote with much enthusiasm, had consulted and had published in the appendices important historical documents, the writing fell short and the overall organization of the book was lacking.  Nonetheless, AGD considered this book a praiseworthy attempt.
