Doughty, Arthur G., Under the Lily and the Rose: A short history of Canada for Children in two volumes, with illustrations in colour from original drawings by Jas. Cockburn, C. Kreighoff, C.W. Jefferys, Chas. Simpson, C. Roper, H.R. Perrigard, F. Hennessey, W.H. Sadd, Denis Eden, Agnes Gardner King, and Gertrude des Clayes.

Doughty did not mention that road repairs day and night on Laurier Ave kept him awake and provided the time for advancing the task of writing Under the Lily and the Rose. Newspaper reports added that he had written the book with his antiquated quill pen (The Ottawa Citizen, 6 December 1928), and Doughty commented in his Preface that “Few printers would have the courage to wrestle with his manuscript”. However, the resulting book was published in 1928 by Modern Press and then in 1931, by J.M. Dent & Sons.

In addition, the illustrations as they appeared in the 1928 Modern edition were assembled together into a book. An additional illustration was found loose at the back of the book, “Le Theatre de Neptune”; this illustration had been included in the 1931 limited edition but not in the 1928 edition. In the LAC blue cloth and leather-bound copy (OCLC #1007479314), there was no publication date, no publisher information, and no indication as to why this book had been created.  One of the illustrations, “Une Petite Canadienne”, that appeared in Under The Lily and The Rose, 1928 and 1931 editions was also reproduced in The Wee Story of Canada and the A.B.C. Book, written for Sally Pitfield, [Halifax]: [s.n.], 1932.

All of the 7 copies of Under the Lily and the Rose in the Wilson Collection were reviewed; these include 4 copies of the 1928 editions, and 3 copies of the 1931 editions. Additional description and pictures of the Wilson Collection copies, and historical context are provided in the notes below.

As well, a 1928 Modern Press edition held by Queen's University (OCLC #63009087) was reviewed, and is pictured above. A digital copy of the 1931 J.M. Dent limited edition (No. 67), volumes 1 and 2, available through Internet Archive (archive.org) was also reviewed.

LAC copy of “Illustrations, Under The Lily and the Rose by A.G. Doughty”, [s.l]: [s.n.], n.d., held by LAC, Rare Book collection (OCLC #1007479314) was reviewed; select images are pictured above.
